Virtual Routers

Virtual routers are virtual network devices that provide routing functions in a software-based manner without the need for a physical device. They perform traditional routing functions such as directing network traffic, forwarding packets, and connecting network segments.

They can offer a more flexible, scalable, and cost-effective solution compared to physical devices. Virtual routers provide network administrators and system engineers with greater control and flexibility to manage network traffic and optimize network infrastructure

  • A virtual router between virtual and physical networks provides access to public networks, such as the Internet, for VMs connected to this virtual network.
  • A virtual router between different virtual networks provides network communication for VMs connected to these virtual networks.

A virtual router has two types of ports:

  • An external gateway that is connected to a physical network.
  • An internal port that is connected to a virtual network.
